Week 5

For this week in class, I have decided that I am going to listen to, and then write about the song, Great Speckled Bird by Roy Acuff. This song follows the typical AABA structure that is one of the most widely used templates for writing a song. It also follows the tune of, "Thrills That I Can't Forget,"  by Welby Toomey and Edgar Boaz. It is also based off of a bible verse, being Jeremiah 12:9. This verse talks about a great speckled bird and heritage.
The song is very slow and happy. Almost a joyful calm and smoothe ballad of someone singing about their joyful aspirations of the future and what is to come. It is also a very blatantly religious song that it is even called a hymn by some people. It definitely has a unique feeling for a hymn. I am surprised how openly religious it is for being a song that was popular enough to make a lasting impact enough that it has become a song that we have studied in class. I would think that it would be a smalle hymn or song that only a small religious sect would sing and or listen to.

  1. I love your perspective! It is funny that we would focus on a religious song, especially in today's world where religion as a whole is kind of turning into a minority. It's sad. I don't remember this song but I does sound like a peaceful song. I'm glad you picked it.

  2. Yah I hear you man not typically what you think of when you hear the word hymn. That being said I dig it. It's a song that has a happy tune kind of a country western theme and delivers a pretty good message. That's what we like to call a win win. I also enjoy that kind of twangy guitar riff he plays through out.
